But what is the definition of gallivanting I hear you ask. What is the meaning of gallivanting? Well I was brought up to believe it meant a man or woman going out looking for a bit of fun with a member , or members, of the opposite sex, "going out on the tiles", or "on the razzle" , "flirting", generally doing something a bit naughty.
Gallivanting is the present participle of the verb to gallivant. Dictionary definitions for the word gallivant include :
To roam about in search of pleasure or amusement.
To play around amorously; flirt.
To run around, gad about.
To go about usually ostentatiously or indiscreetly with members of the opposite sex.
To travel, roam, or move about for pleasure.
To gad about with members of the opposite sex.
To go about in search of amusement or excitement.
To flirt, to romance.
To roam about for pleasure without any definite plan.
Variations in the spelling include galavanting or galavantin , with a more modern interpretation of the meaning of the word coming from the urbandictionary.
Looking for trouble. Out doing something your parents, spouse, teacher, and/or preacher wouldn't approve of. Breaking laws and moral codes definitely fall under the category of "galavantin'" Don't worry Mom, we won't be gone too long. We're just going galavantin'.
It means fooling around or horseplay.
But that one has got it wrong !
When I hear it used seriously nowadays, it's with a pejorative connotation--e.g. "We're here working our asses off, and you're out gallivanting around!"
A word of my childhood. If we were going out for the day, we'd be off gallivanting, or as my mum used to say "going there and back to see how far it is."
My favourite definition of the word is from an Irish slang website.
"Michael was supposed to be milking the cows but he's gone off gallivanting instead"
We can conclude then that gallivanting is a fun word that has several meanings, and though we may not have known the dictionary definition of the word we all knew what it meant.
